It is interesting the questions that arise after a tragedy. Our tendency is to go through life ignoring God except when a tragedy occurs. And then we 'blame Him', 'question Him', 'get angry at Him', justify our ignorance of Him or our disbelief of Him.
Two days ago there was an incomprehensible tragedy close to Nashville, TN. Steven Curtis Chapman is known for his Christian/Gospel music. His teenage son was in the family's SUV and didn't see the 5 year old daughter. Many family members watched as the 5 year old was killed.
There is no counsel no rationalization no explanation for such a tragedy. It is indeed an incomprehensible tragedy. There probably is not a reasonable answer to the inevitable, Why?. But not having an answer does not change the the depth of the tragedy. Please pray for the Chapman family as they walk through this very difficult time.
"We often treat God as Lord of the predicament and Master of the pinch. He is there to bail us out, to whisk us away, to vindicate and rescue us. He is the God of our binds and squeezes, but rarely the God of our lives. Until a crisis hits, we really do not want God crowding in on us. We want Him to keep a safe, cool distance, hovering in the shadows until summoned, usually to assist us in being true to ourselves." this is from one of our favorite books Your God Is Too Safe by Mark Buchanan
This tragedy does not change who God is. '9-11' did not change who God is. My colon cancer does not change who God is. This coming Presidential election, as tragic as it may be, will not change who God is. Trials that we have do not change the character of God.
My colon cancer was not a surprise to God. It was a surprise to me and not a very nice surprise. Do I wish that He would have prevented it?? DUH!!! Absolutely!!! But it doesn't change who He is. I could make up some fairly lame excuse as to 'why God allowed this to happen'. But would it really make a difference??? And as to getting angry, who am I to sit in judgement of God. Jesus, toward the end of the sermon on the mount, said that God is God of it all regardless.
He is who He is and He is helping me walk through this challenge.
God is good all the time!

Matthew 5:44-45 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. ESV
